I am truly wondering what the market is for fiction. There seems to be so much out there today. Although I love to write it, I tend to think my non-fiction works may sell better.

Exactly. Sometimes a story is best served with a passing mention of something that might make some people queamish, sometimes a full scene, sometimes nothing at all. It’s when a book turns into nothing but gross/uncomfortable scene that seem to have no point is there a serious issue in my opinion. Don’t like torture porn movies, don’t like torture porn books.

Stieg Larrson’s wildly famous “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” had many rape scenes. And while they were difficult, and sometimes disturbing, to read, it moved the plot forward and helped the reader sympathize and understand Lisbeth’s actions. In situations like these, real life horrors work well in novels. But if there’s no point beyond shocking the reader, definitely cut it.

Exactly. To most publishers, up to three chapters of a full length work is no big deal. It’s a good thing to get people interested in your books (most books have at least an excerpt up online) publishers for the most part just don’t want to lose potential readers who have already had the chance to get the book somewhere else (perhaps for free). If you only post a little of your book, you shouldn’t have a problem.

I am doing exactly this right now, and putting the first few chapters of my WIP out there to “whet the appetites” as they say. I wonder if the key here is that “the novel in its entirety”, never materializes. If only a handful of chapters appear are publishers fine with that?
